Residential solar: what you need to know
Residential solar is the most accessible entry into self-generation. A typical Greek household is covered by a system of 3–5 kWp, while homes with a heat pump, extensive air conditioning, a pool or an electric car are usually in the 6–10 kWp. In Attica, every installed kWp yields around 1,400-1,500 kWh per year.
What is particular about homes is the consumption profile. Unlike a business, a household usually consumes little at midday and a lot in the evening. That is why, on residential projects, the battery matters disproportionately: it shifts midday production into the hours when you actually consume.
The second issue is the roof type. Every covering – tile, bituminous membrane, metal sheet, flat roof – requires a different mounting system, so that watertightness is preserved and the structure is not overstressed. The choice is made during the site survey and documented in the study.
Finally, there is the appearance. On homes we work with all-black panels, aligned rows and concealed cable routing, so the installation looks like part of the building rather than an addition.
Why it is worth it for a home
A lower bill
A correctly sized system reduces the electricity bill to a small fraction of what it is today.
Eligibility for subsidy
Support programmes for households are activated periodically, often at a higher rate when a battery is included.
Property value
A property with an active solar system and good energy performance is more attractive to sell or rent.
Synergy with a heat pump
Heating, cooling and hot water from your own energy – the combination with the highest return.
Vehicle charging
Your electric car charges on solar energy, sharply reducing running costs.
Minimal maintenance
Periodic cleaning and inspection. Panels typically come with a 25-year performance warranty.
Suitable applications & roof types
Detached houses & maisonettes
The most typical case, with full design freedom.
Apartments with a roof terrace
Feasible with the right of exclusive use and the relevant consent.
Holiday homes
Summer use with an air-conditioning peak – an excellent case for solar coverage.
Homes off the grid
Where there is no supply, the solution is off-grid system.
Typical residential system sizes
| Home profile | Capacity | Annual production | Surface |
|---|---|---|---|
| A small household, without air conditioning | 3 kWp | ~4.300 kWh | ~15 m² |
| An average household | 5 kWp | ~7.200 kWh | ~25 m² |
| A home with a heat pump | 8 kWp | ~11.500 kWh | ~40 m² |
| A large home with a pool / EV | 10 kWp | ~14.400 kWh | ~50 m² |
Panels
High-efficiency monocrystalline, typically 450-600 W per panel, with a 25-year performance warranty.
Inverter
String or hybrid, single-phase or three-phase depending on the supply, with monitoring through an app.
Mounting
Aluminium with stainless steel fittings, certified for the wind loading of the area.
Protection
DC/AC panels, surge arresters, earthing and equipotential bonding to ELOT standards.
Delivery process
Study & quotation
Bill analysis, production estimate and a detailed quotation – free and without obligation.
Site survey
Inspection of the roof, shading, the electrical panel and cable routing. Finalising the solution.
Permitting
The application to the operator and all the paperwork, with no involvement from you.
Installation
Typically 1-3 days, with protection of the site and a clean handover of the roof.
Testing & Installer Declaration
Measurements, functional testing and preparation of the Installer Declaration.
Activation
Meter replacement, the offsetting contract and start of production with monitoring on your phone.
Frequently asked questions
How many kWp does my house need?
An average household is covered by 3-5 kWp. With a heat pump, several air conditioners, a pool or an electric car, the size rises to 6-10 kWp. The exact figure comes from annual consumption and how it is distributed over time.
Will it damage my roof?
No, when the mounting is done correctly. On tiled roofs the hooks bear on the load-bearing structure without drilling through tiles; on flat roofs we use ballasted frames or properly sealed fixings. Watertightness is checked at handover.
Can I do it in an apartment block?
It depends on the right of exclusive use of the roof terrace and on the building regulations – the consent of co-owners is usually required. We check the position before proceeding to design.
Should I fit a battery from the start?
If your consumption is mainly in the evening, a battery improves performance significantly – and often increases the subsidy rate when a programme is active. Alternatively we fit a hybrid inverter now and add the battery later. See the page solar with batteries.
