Residential solar: what you need to know

Residential solar is the most accessible entry into self-generation. A typical Greek household is covered by a system of 3–5 kWp, while homes with a heat pump, extensive air conditioning, a pool or an electric car are usually in the 6–10 kWp. In Attica, every installed kWp yields around 1,400-1,500 kWh per year.

What is particular about homes is the consumption profile. Unlike a business, a household usually consumes little at midday and a lot in the evening. That is why, on residential projects, the battery matters disproportionately: it shifts midday production into the hours when you actually consume.

The second issue is the roof type. Every covering – tile, bituminous membrane, metal sheet, flat roof – requires a different mounting system, so that watertightness is preserved and the structure is not overstressed. The choice is made during the site survey and documented in the study.

Finally, there is the appearance. On homes we work with all-black panels, aligned rows and concealed cable routing, so the installation looks like part of the building rather than an addition.

Frequently asked questions

How many kWp does my house need?

An average household is covered by 3-5 kWp. With a heat pump, several air conditioners, a pool or an electric car, the size rises to 6-10 kWp. The exact figure comes from annual consumption and how it is distributed over time.

Will it damage my roof?

No, when the mounting is done correctly. On tiled roofs the hooks bear on the load-bearing structure without drilling through tiles; on flat roofs we use ballasted frames or properly sealed fixings. Watertightness is checked at handover.

Can I do it in an apartment block?

It depends on the right of exclusive use of the roof terrace and on the building regulations – the consent of co-owners is usually required. We check the position before proceeding to design.

Should I fit a battery from the start?

If your consumption is mainly in the evening, a battery improves performance significantly – and often increases the subsidy rate when a programme is active. Alternatively we fit a hybrid inverter now and add the battery later. See the page solar with batteries.
