What a serious energy study includes

The energy study is the technical documentation of your investment. It answers four questions with numbers rather than estimates: how much energy you use and when, how much can be produced at that particular site, what share of production you will actually use and how well the result performs financially.

Without those four, any quotation is guesswork. The most common mistake in the market is sizing by eye or by roof area – an approach that ends either in undersized systems that do not cover consumption, or oversized ones that never pay back.

The study is also where the following is decided: self-consumption scheme: Net Billing, Zero Feed-In or off-grid system. That decision has a greater effect on the final result than the choice of panel brand.

The seven stages of the study

Consumption analysis

Processing at least a year of bills, seasonality analysis, separation of daytime and evening consumption. For businesses, load recording with a power analyser where required.

Site recording

Measuring available surface, orientation and tilt, checking the type and condition of the roof, structural adequacy and mounting method.

Shading analysis

Recording the horizon and obstructions – buildings, trees, chimneys, air conditioning units – and estimating losses by hour and season. It determines the string layout.

Production simulation

Hourly simulation with meteorological data for the site, calculation of annual yield per kWp and monthly production distribution.

Self-consumption calculation

Matching production and consumption hour by hour, to arrive at the real utilisation rate – with and without a battery.

Equipment sizing

Selection of capacity, panel type, inverter and storage, single-line diagrams, cable cross-sections, protection devices and an earthing study.

Techno-economic assessment

Estimate of annual savings, payback period and return on investment, with scenarios for different energy prices and system sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the study free?

The initial technical study and quotation are provided free and without obligation. More extensive studies for complex industrial projects or for funding applications are priced separately and offset against the project if it proceeds.

How long does it take?

For residential projects, usually a few working days from the moment we have the data. For industrial projects with load recording, the time depends on the length of the measurement – typically one to two weeks.

I do not have old bills. Can you still do a study?

Yes. On new builds, or where there is no history, we work from a load schedule: we record the appliances and their usage and construct a consumption profile. It is the same method we use on off-grid systems.
